Year of the Cicada

This was the year of the cicada, oh the noise! We had such swarms that an ice cream place in Columbia came out with cicada ice cream. People bought it, then realized it had bugs in it, then there was an uproar. You would think something called cicada ice cream would be questionable, but then again, I guess I am just using common sense. The cicadas left these shells behind everywhere and looked like aliens coming out of them...all white with these bid red eyes...ugh!

Edible Plants

Summer is the best for all the fruit that the orchard provides, assuming that the conditions are optimal.

For the third year in a row, the cherries have escaped us. Three years ago the tree just didn't fruit a lot. Last year we saw the cherries were just about right for the picking the next day. The next day, they were completely gone...stinkin birds. This year we decided to net the tree, that was a hoot, and all for nothing. They got nice and red, but mom and dad said that they should get a deep red, so we waited. Apparently we waited too long, they rotted on the tree and never got to that deep red. Dad said that next year, he is just going to eat them green.

The grapes have been another problem fruit for my parents. They ripened the first year, and ever since, the japanese beetles get to them, along with some kind of rot. This picture doesn't look like concord grapes, but hopefully this year, they will get there.
The strawberries did wonderfully in the garden. Funny really, my dad decided that putting up the fence around the garden was just too much trouble this year, so we left it off. We thought for sure the berries wouldn't make it with any the bunnies and deer that come around. You know what, we had a plethora! My mom must have made 4 batches of strawberry jam and we had spinach and strawberry salad every night for a few weeks (I'm not complaining, that stuff is delicious)!

Around the yard

Three years

For our third anniversary, we decided to go to Ha Ha Tonka State Park, don't ask me where the name came from. Besides the manor house, they had a natural bridge. If we hadn't stopped to see that one on the way back from Idaho I think this one would have been more impressive. Nonetheless, it is still amazing. In this picture I was trying to get that cool water stream effect, but I couldn't get it to work.

After running around the park we went to the three putt putt golf courses they have in Osage Beach. We recommend these (the third just failed in comparison). I guess I had to admit that William won the first two courses and I the third. I'm not sure if it worse to lose by a lot or a little. The first he beat me by 3 points and second course by 1, only 1.

Ha Ha Tonka

They say these are old castle ruins, but it is more like an old manor house. Still, it was pretty impressive. It was interesting to see the way this "castle" was placed on the cliff side, along with the carriage house and the water tower. I feel bad for those who had to make that trip from the water tower to the house.

It was supposed to rain that day, but we made the journey anyway. Go figure, the weather people were wrong once again and it turned out to be a really nice day. Note for the wise, get to parks early in the morning when no one else is around, it makes for a much better experience.

Quarter of a Century

Can you believe it?! William and I are now a quarter of a century year old. How did this happen? On top of that, I had my hair cut the other day and the lady found a white hair...not gray, white. I told William he must be stressing me out too much.

Nature in Missouri

Turtles are very common around these parts. Mostly in the variety of snapping turtles and box turtles, though you are most likely to see them squarshed on the road. Do you know how to tell the difference? Box turtles look like boxes, and snapping turtles snap, duh?!?! When they are younger, the best way to tell is to look for the red on the belly...if it's red, it's dangerous...meaning a snapping turtle. This guy pictured is a box turtle that was hanging out in the yard when I was mowing.

This blue bird had an unfortunate accident in colliding with my parent's living room window. William witnessed the event and figured he would go see if he could help the thing out (good thing since it's kinda of what he will be doing for a living). The poor bird had knocked itself out and so William placed it on this bush so it wouldn't be easy prey. That is how I got this amazing picture. Maybe I just should have said it was my amazing ninja skills that got me so close to the bird, not the fact that it was recuperating from the flight incident it had.

It always amazes me all the critters and creatures that I get to see in Missouri. I must have forgotten all the life that is in the world being out in Idaho in the middle of no where for so long :). Just kidding...some things live out there too, just not in the abundance that is back east.
The view outside of the window that birds like to fly into is this tree. We usually hang a humming bird feeder from the branches, but that is beside the point. I would like to talk about this devious little squirrel. It has found out that by sitting on top of the bird house and hanging it's body over the edge, it could gain access to the bird seed inside the house. I was trying to get a picture of it in the act, but this was the best I could come up with.

Now for the grand finale. Have you ever seen a white deer? If you have, then you can stop reading because this is meant to impress people. On the way home from my grandpa's house we spotted the one and only white deer on the face of the earth!! Believe me, ok, it was a long shot. Apparently they aren't that rare, but it was the first time I had ever seen one, and I didn't have to pay to get in. I thought it was pretty cool.

Car Ride

After packing up Nebbie and Dad's truck and small trailer, or should I say stuffed, we headed off to make the drive from Idaho to Missouri. To brake up the driving, we stopped in Wyoming and

rented a van to go see some sights. Don't tell the rental place, but we took the cat with us, and then erased all evidence of him being there before returning it.

It always interests me to see where Teddy is going to end up in the car while in transit. When in the car he always insists on being on someone's lap, usually the driver's, even though he is anti-touching all the rest of the time. In the rental he seemed to like the cup holder in between the two captain seats. It was pretty funny when he sat on the map on top of the cup holder and slide off at a stop.

Farwells

The only thing sad about moving to a new place is the good people we leave. Josh and William have gotten to be great school buds. We wish Josh and Nicole luck in moving to Pennsylvania for school and wish all good things with the upcoming addition to the family!

William's Graduation

It's official, William now has a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology, I'm so proud! For those who don't know, we are now in Missouri. William has been admitted into the veterinarian program at Mizzou. It is a four year program, so unless he decides to do a double major it should take him four years to finish up and get his degree here.

Both sides of our family were able to come. It was great being able to see them and hang out for a time. We sent some of our stuff back with the Meyers side...and good thing too because it was really close getting it all to fit in the trailer to go back to Missouri :). Thank goodness we were able to sell most of the big furniture we wanted to, we have been extremely blessed.

BIG JUDD'S

We figured that a Rexburg experience that everyone should have is Big Judd's. So William and I thought it would be good to go to when family came into town for graduation. What we didn't know was that there are two in close proximity to Rexburg. In looking it up on the web, we ended up going to the wrong one. We should have talked to one of our local friends to get the right place.

Daniel ate the whole thing while four of us shared another. Can you believe that he said he was still hungry after finishing it? Teenage boys...I guess we can blame it on his angel chiseled body (at least that's what the boys tell him).

We're Professionals

We spent a lot of time in the clubhouse the last couple of weeks while William was in school, that is when he wasn't studying finals. We thus have become professionals at pool.

Since most of our stuff was packed away in boxes, and the only other thing to do was watch tv during the snowy weather, this was a good way to pass the time.

William was showing me how to hop the que ball, I'm not very good at it. There was an impressive move where William 'purposely' had the que ball ride the border and jump back down to hit one of his balls in the corner pocket. I just had to settle for hopping it off the table or hitting the unintended ball every time I attempted it. Even with my lack of hop, I am a formidable adversary.

Meet James, Jamie, Bob, and Ella. We have known Bob and Jamie since the semester William and I started dating, William and Bob were roomies.

Jamie asked us to babysit one night, so William and I took on the challenge. They say the best form of birth control is babysitting...with this family I don't agree. We had them over for dinner one time and the kids ate the spinach salad and didn't want dessert.

Babysitting was great, even if James missed his mommy for a bit. We went over for a waffle lunch with them and James started crying because he thought mom was going to leave him again.

Halloween Party

This year we decided to throw a Halloween bash. Our neighbors had the same idea and so we thought to throw one together.

Our lovely tree of yesteryear died during the summer. We had thought to revive it, but our Frankenstein ideas just wouldn't work. So we thought to give it a final farwell by making it our ghost tree for the party.

By far I think this was the creepiest decoration we had up. The spiders were gigantic, but I was able to sleep at night because they were out in the living room.

With all the free time on my hands I decided to build a coffin. It just so happen to be the prefect size for Ella Patten. Plus she was a vampire for Halloween so it fit.

Pet Costume Contest

The Village had a contest for resident's pets for Halloween. We thought since it was highly unlikely for people to dress up their cats that Teddy would have a pretty good chance. So we dressed him as Cat Dracula. Guess what, he won!!

There were only two other cats there. One was an angel, and the other was a monkey that wouldn't come out of its cage. Teddy wasn't so scared either so I think people were actually able to see him.

I thought the cutest dog was batman. I thought he should have won.

The Museum of Idaho

The Museum of Idaho located in Idaho Falls has traveling exhibits come at least once a year. In the past they have done the Titanic and some Pharaohs. This year they had a Da Vinci exhibit.

Da Vinci had a lot to do with everything. He dabbled with levers and pullies, along with gears and shafts.

He even constructed some war equipment. This one was designed to be drawn by a horse and go through the battle field slicing people. What I thought was interesting though was that Da Vinci always held a key component back on his war devices, so that these machines were actually never really built and used in his day.

Of course everyone knows that he was famous for painting the Mona Lisa, the Last Supper, and that spread eagle guy. What I hadn't realized was that he became such an awesome painter because of his dive into determining how the human body works. He used to steal dead bodies to cut them open and see how muscles and bones worked together in the body. His practices were frowned upon so he had to do these things in secret.

Da Vinci looked into how to fly as well. His inspiration was birds, and thus a lot of the contraptions he built look wing like.

I also didn't know that he did quite a bit of work in the area of hydraulics. He had some boats and ways to walk on water, though I liked this idea of scuba diving.

They had a bridge built entirely of poles that people could take apart and put back together. I asked one of the museum watchers if people usually do it by themselves. She said people usually have someone help but that she saw a ten year old do it by himself. Well, I couldn't be passed up by a ten year old, so I did it by myself as well.

Craters of the Moon

We ended up going to the national park on National Park day, though we hadn't realized until after the fact. We were thinking that they let us in for free because the place was under some major construction work.

There is a one way loop through the park and we decided to bike it. I hated it the first 3 miles because it was a steep incline the whole way. So I cheated and made William walk up it with me.

We saw some cool splatter cones and William was excited to use the word kapuka, which is an island in a lava flow.

They had 3 caves, created by underground lava flows, open to the public to climb through. Unfortunately, we didn't bring our flashlights and so were only able to go through one of them.

The caves were nice and cool, which was nice compared to the desert feel on the surface. We also saw some chipmunks out on the lava formations, which was surprising since the nearest tree was a mile away.

Temple to Temple

William and Josh decided that they would run the temple to temple between the two of them back in April before parting for the summer. Over the summer neither I think trained as much as they thought they would.

Upon arriving back at school and realizing the run would be 38 miles, they recruited two other people. The rules were that the teams had to be an even amount of people and if you had guys and gals, you needed the same number of each. Josh's little sister said she would run and then they had a volunteer join our team. The team was called Moose on the Loose.

The starting point was the Rexburg temple. It started as a pretty cold morning. Ashley started the race.

I thought this guy had cool shoes. Apparently, only those who are avid runners invest in these things.

William took over after Ashley and ran 10.6 miles straight through. I like this picture because it is a good view of the Tetons in the back.

William handed off to Josh who also ran 10.6 miles straight through. Josh handed off to Erin who ran 10.7 miles. This is Josh and William giving the moose sign.

Ashley ran the last few miles after Erin. Everyone crossed the finish line together.

The ending point was the Idaho Falls temple. Nicole (Josh's wife) and I were the constant cheerers and would drive to each check point to make sure our runners were still doing well.

Cat Tails

I had wanted to go here for some time because I had thought I would get to pet a big kitty. The place had even told me that I would get to pet a siberian tiger cub if we came such and such dates. So we went such and such dates to find out after we paid that we couldn't pet the cubs until other such and such dates. Phooey on them. I guess I will just have to go to Africa.

This is the closest I have been able to get to some big kitties. Granted, there were two sets of fencing between us that made taking pictures difficult, but it was still cool.

I was aiming for the one taking a bath. He seemed to be enjoying himself.

I've seen lions before, but seeing one on the same ground level as you and just a few feet away is still pretty intimidating.

We could have fed the kitties if we paid additional fees, but you had to do it through pexiglass so you wouldn't be in danger. I thought it would have been cooler just to do it through the fence.

Bottle Feeding

I got the chore of feeding two calves this summer. Have you ever tried it? It is not the easiest thing in the world, feeding two at the same time. I got pretty good at it though.

Aren't they cute? One of the calves was kind of sickly, so it got special treatment, not the gentle kind though. It had to get daily shots for a while and I just couldn't do it. I had to have William come home on his lunch break one day because I just couldn't get the needle into the cow's skin. It started to wail, and I just couldn't emotionally do it. Sad, I know, but I am ok with it.

Unfortunately, the sickly one ended up dieing on me when we switch the calves over from being bottle fed to eating grain and hay. Such is life.

Shaving the Cat

Teddy was a mess of mates at the beginning of summer. Brushing had done no good it was quite difficult to get him to sit still long enough for me to cut the mates out.

Teddy was thought to be a fat lazy cat that just laid around the house all day. Not something significantly different from most other cats I know.
After finding out that it would cost $70 to give Teddy a lion cut, William and I decided that we could do it ourselves.

Looks like a totally different cat, huh?! Teddy sort of acted like a different cat after that. He would strut around like he was cool and actually became playful. Who woulda thunk?
Now since most of the hair is back, being October, he's back to being a lazy cat.

Summer Projects

We had a lot of summer projects at the Meyers' house this summer. Amy and William were the instigators in getting the horse trailer out of the yard. Thus William and I built a brand new clothes line. William fixed some of the fences closest to the house. Amy, Mom Meyers, and I painted the kitchen yellow, then while everyone was away, I painted the living room, hallway, and boys bathroom. I made some window treatments with the help of Mom Meyers and Amy. The biggest project, however, was building the porch, though William might say the biggest was to clean out the barn.

The old porch was moved into the barn to act as a floor.

Sheila helped dig holes a little. Daniel was given the task of digging most of them though.

Amy mixed concrete, and is now the concrete professional.

Kevin and William laid most of the top boards down while Mom Meyers and I had to get the rest of the boards.

The completed project. Doesn't it make you want to shed tears of joy at the shear beauty? No?! Well, I think it was a major upgrade.

Summer Birthdays

This would be the awesome castle cake that I made and Daniel of course, for the cake was made for his birthday.

William made the cake all by his lonesome, isn't it beautiful.

Roger didn't want a cake for his birthday, so instead I made X number of white chocolate macadamia cookies.

Amy wanted a cheesecake for her birthday.

Lighthouses

Cape Disappointment Lighthouse: I liked this one the best. It also lies on the most dangerous part of the coast. There are several deaths every year and is the place where the big dog military personnel come to train.

You can't tell from the picture, but there was an extremely steep drop from where I took the picture to the shore below. This place was called Dead Man's Cove.

I thought it would be really cool to climb into. I was having second thoughts when I saw all the spider webs, but William said I had to hurry because the camera was dieing, so if I look scared, it's because I was.

Grays Harbor Lighthouse: this one was a little depressing because it wasn't on the shore line, it was in the middle of the town. Silly us for driving out to the beach thinking the light house would have been out there.

North Head Lighthouse: This was the only lighthouse open to the public to tour. We would have gone up, but we left our money behind and the cool optical lens had been removed.

Rialto Beach

We bought this book for good trails to go hike since we had no idea about the area. In the book we came across this place.

It took us about an hour and a half to hike out to this spot. I tell you, walking on the beach is quite the work out. This place can only be gotten to during certain hours of the day, the tide gets too high otherwise.

We found several few starfish. Though every orange starfish was paired with a purple one whereas the purple ones were also found alone. We didn't quite know what to make of it.

We both got a little wet in this adventure. The tide rose a bit in the little time that we were there. William got just a little more drenched than I did.

Hoh Rainforest

Whenever I think of a rainforest I think of how the movies depict them...dense under growth and scary noises making you think you are being hunted. This wasn't like that. Everything just looked very lush and grown over with moss.

Northern Cascades

We decided to take a trip over to the west coast at the beginning of summer because we had no idea when we might have another chance. On the drive over we took the northern route. Unknown to us, the pass had only opened the day before due to all the winter snow. That meant little traffic, yeah!

There were all these turn-offs for hiking trails. Most of the trail heads were buried in snow. We also didn't realize you needed a permit for the short walking trails. Since the traffic was sparse we decided to chance it on one of the trails at the base of the mountains and take a peek.

Jessie's Graduation

I know, it's finally happened, I have officially graduated. Yipee. Now as for the rest of my life, who knows. Thin summer we'll be in Spokane area so William can complete an internship.

Since Mom and Dad were able to come into town, we did the graduation banquet. It was nice, though there wasn't much chance for chatting since we had some speakers.

Magic Mountain

This was the first time I had ever been tubing. Lesson learned: do not let William lead you down the run because he will go down one lane and drag you in the median all the way down so that you have a face full of snow when you get down to the bottom.

Twin Falls

We went one weekend with Yai and Cameron to Twin Falls to stay with his parents. Sunday was spent seeing the sights. So of course when one is in Twin Falls...

The Coveted Painting

Grandma was a wonderful painter. William and I were able to take this painting home with us just because we had room in the car for it. Thus, it is on loan to us until William's mom decides which painting she wants.

The Inheritance

After the funeral, there was the matter of inheritances. I thought it was a good idea that grandma's kids took the matter into their hands soon after the death. I believe it gave them all something to do, to avoid dwelling on their loss. With that being said, grandma had a ton of stuff. Not only did she sell iron wood back in the day, but she was also an amazing painter. When all the siblings had taken all the iron wood they wanted, there were still some big pieces left. So William and I took some sea horses, since we had room in our vehicle for them.

Grandma Hutching's Funeral

William's grandma passed away Friday, 5 Feb 2010. With such tidings as these, life got a little hectic. Being in Rexburg, we had William's family staying in our little apartment on their way through to Utah. There's no problem with that; it was just a ton of people in a one-bedroom apartment. Then I needed to convince William to actually go to the funeral, skip school and make it up later.

The funeral went well on Tuesday, 9 Feb 2010. Grandma was able to get her bag-pipes player at her grave site; and all of her grand kids, including those who had married into the family, sung I am a Child of God. After the grave site service, we went back to the church and were fed by the Relief Society. It was here that William suggested a bouquet toss. If you wish to know what he meant, you will have to ask him.

Falling in a Winter Wonderland

So we went skiing with Emily and Rory. Or should I say they went skiing and I pretended to. At least the snow provided a nice and fluffy landing, and I only fell once going downhill. Now that I have gotten my winter activities in for the season, I can lick my wounds and wait for another year to come around.

So of course William and I bring our sleds to go sledding and we arrive to mud and ice. The whole two weeks we were there brought nothing of the white fluffy stuff that falls from the sky, not until the last day we are there. The above picture is Gupsten sporting the start of what should have been a white Christmas. But alas, we just got to drive back to Rexburg in it.

Spokane Temple

Fortunately, we were able to take a trip to the temple this time around. It was nice to get out of the house and spend a peaceful day remembering what Christmas is all about.

Christmas Day

I believe Momma Meyers' Christmas wish came true in that all of her kids were there for the holidays (with the exception of Seth on a mission). That meant lots of presents under the Christmas tree. As you may have noticed, it was a Charlie Brown Christmas tree, much to William's dismay, but since it was already decorated when we got there, we didn't want to go through the hassle of getting another one.

For those of you who don't know, we have a cat. I was happy that Teddy hasn't been eaten or ran away in this year that he has spent at the Meyers'. I was also glad that we got to spend Christmas with our fluff-ball.

The day was full of many fairies, for Lydia needed other fairies to play with, and tons of junk food, lots of sleeping, and of course much game playing. All in all, it couldn't have been better.

The Bag Game

The Christmas Letter

Jessie was off to the nutty house

She worked for a mean and ugly matron

So after some yelling and some screaming

Jessie left with a face all gleaming

Who decided to hire her for work

This cook was then right after fired

And two other’s jobs were expired

But somehow Jessie held on strong

The Night of Halloween

We spent Halloween over at the Johnson's house. We had some really good chili and misfortune cookies that Emily's mom made. Apparently William was caught double dipping and what I ate really wasn't chicken. William did bring his werewolf costume but kept the mask off all night so I guess really he was just a hairy-chested lumberjack for the night. Emily and Rory were mad scientists, as you can see above.

Pre-Halloween

So we went as Little Red Riding Hood and the Big Bad Wolf. I really wanted to go as Little Red Riding Hood because I think the cape would look really good on me, but Jessie refused and made me be the Big Bad Wolf. She said it fit my personality better, whatever that means.

"Little Red Riding Hood. You sure are lookin' good. You are everything that a big bad wolf could want."

We hung out with Yai and Cameron on Friday night and took a bunch of random pictures. Here they are swimming in a sea of tiles as two mer-people. Cameron looks really good in tight, sparkly pants.

Bear World

So in all the many years I have gone to college I had never been to Bear World, which is just a mere 5 minutes drive away. Mostly because it was expensive. Luck so happened to fall upon us when Kenna found a half off admission price for a car load. Thus Yai, Cameron, Caleb, William and I piled into Nebbie and off we went. It was tons of fun. We saw Ursus arctos and Ursus americanas along with an albino Cervus elaphus, some Canis lupus and even an Alces alces. There were even some Odocoilius virginianus and Odocoilius hemionus that we could pet. But don't believe me, see the pictures for yourself.

Our Wedding

This is for those of you who have yet to see the wedding pictures. I know, I know, its been a year and a half and I am finally getting these out there. But hey, better late then never. The temple was Nauvoo and the date was May 2008. It was a wonderful day, couldn't have asked for better weather or a better companion to share it with.

So of course we left making our masks until an hour before the dance, but I think they turned out pretty well. The black one was requested or demanded to have no glitter or pansy looking stuff on it, thus the braided ribbon.
